Growing plants – healthy growth from the start

For successful plant cultivation, four basic requirements are essential: suitable soil, water, light, and, depending on the plant, appropriate nutrients. In addition, there are practical aids such as seed pots, planters, a spray bottle for careful watering, and, if necessary, a mini greenhouse or a propagator for the germination phase. Those who wish to cultivate plants long-term will supplement their equipment with seed compost for germination, high-quality potting soil for the growth phase, and suitable fertilizers for ongoing care. Location conditions such as light intensity, temperature, and humidity also play a central role and should be adapted as much as possible to the needs of the respective plant. With this basic equipment, getting started in plant cultivation is reliably successful.

Yes, many plants can be easily grown indoors and thrive there for years. Classic houseplants like Monstera, Ficus, palms, succulents, and Dracaena are specifically adapted to indoor conditions. Many kitchen herbs like basil, parsley, chives, mint, and rosemary also grow reliably on a windowsill. For vegetables like tomatoes, peppers, lettuce, or chili, particularly bright locations or supplemental grow lights are suitable. Important for indoor cultivation are sufficient light – ideally by a bright window, preferably south or east-facing – a pleasant room temperature, and adjusted watering, as plants lose less water indoors than outdoors. With the right soil, even beginners can succeed with indoor cultivation.

The suitable soil depends on the growth phase and plant type. For sowing and germination, special seed compost is ideal; it is particularly fine, loose, and low in nutrients – this promotes root formation and prevents overly rapid, unstable growth. After pricking out or repotting, a soil adapted to the plant is used: universal potting soil for many ornamental and container plants, herb soil for aromatic kitchen herbs, vegetable soil for tomatoes, peppers, and lettuces, seed compost for seedlings, and special soils for succulents, orchids, or cannabis. High-quality soils are characterized by a balanced mix of nutrients, good water retention, and adequate drainage. This creates a stable growth environment in which plants thrive healthily and robustly.

Fertilization usually begins once the plant is actively growing after propagation and has developed its first true leaves. During the germination phase and in the first few weeks, high-quality seedling or potting soil usually provides enough nutrients – additional fertilization would more likely stress the delicate roots. Once the young plants are repotted into larger containers and are growing vigorously, a weakly dosed fertilization via watering, approximately every 2 to 4 weeks, is recommended. During the main growth phase and flowering phase, fertilization can be more intensive, always tailored to the plant species. In autumn and winter, the need for fertilizer significantly decreases; many plants do not need any fertilizer at all during their dormant phase. Organic fertilizers are particularly gentle in this regard.

The propagation of plants follows a clear process, which, with a little patience, reliably succeeds. First, propagation pots or coir pellets are filled with fine seedling compost and lightly moistened. Then, depending on the variety, seeds are either scattered superficially (light germinators) or lightly covered with soil (dark germinators). The soil is kept uniformly moist with a spray bottle, without soaking it. A transparent cover or a mini-greenhouse creates optimal humidity for germination. At temperatures between 18 and 25 degrees and in a bright location, the first cotyledons usually appear after 3 to 14 days. As soon as the young plants have 2 to 4 true leaves, they are pricked out and transplanted into larger pots with potting soil.

In plant cultivation, there are some typical beginner's mistakes that can be easily avoided. The most common mistake is overwatering: many plants are sensitive to waterlogging and then develop root rot. It helps to let the top few centimeters of soil dry out between waterings. A second classic mistake is over-fertilizing during the propagation phase – the nutrients in the potting soil are perfectly sufficient here. Incorrect site selection, such as too little light for vegetables or too much direct sun for shade plants, also frequently leads to problems. Further typical pitfalls include repotting too late, incorrect pricking out of young plants, and using unsuitable soil. With high-quality substrate, adapted watering, and a little patience, these mistakes can be avoided from the outset.

For beginners, easy-care, robust plants that forgive small care mistakes and deliver quick, visible results are particularly suitable. For houseplants, snake plant (Sansevieria), pothos, ficus, ZZ plant (Zamioculcas), and succulents are highly recommended. In the herb garden, chives, parsley, basil, mint, and thyme can be successfully grown even without extensive prior knowledge. Those who want to grow vegetables should ideally start with cherry tomatoes, radishes, lettuce, zucchini, or beans – these plants grow quickly and yield noticeable results in the very first season. For the garden, robust perennials like lavender, sage, or cranesbill are ideal. With each successful cultivation, self-confidence and experience grow – allowing for more demanding plants to be cultivated later on.
